Weekly Update: June 12, 2025 at 10:07 PM Pacific Time
General Conditions
Weather has stabilized at very comfortable levels. There were more afternoon clouds last weekend than expected; and there was even some rain, thunder, and lightning. Daytime highs have been around 70°, overnight lows in the 40s°. For the weekly record, visit the Central Sierra Snow Laboratory web site (https://cssl.berkeley.edu); click on the “Weather Condition Plots” and select “week”.
Most of the snow is gone at 7000 ft elevation and deciduous trees and shrubs are leafing out. All of the leaves are out at 6000 ft. Van Norden Meadow is soggy, but you can walk or bike the Old Lincoln Highway. A dozen types of wildflowers are blooming on slopes that get a lot of sun — mules ears, paintbrush, stickweed, … Mosquitos are coming out. Webcams at Sugar Bowl (http://www.sugarbowl.com/home) and Donner Ski Ranch (http://webcams.donnerskiranch.com/) provide an up-to-the-minute view of current conditions.
If hiking, expect more than the usual number of downed trees — the result of strong winds last November. Fire danger around the Summit is “moderate” (https://www.truckeefire.org/). There are no restrictions yet on outdoor barbecues, but they should be coming soon. Greenwaste programs are up and running.
Sunrise/Sunset: Today’s (June 12) sunrise was at 5:33 AM; sunset will be at 8:29 PM. Sunrise drifted earlier by about 2 minutes compared to last week. Sunset drifted later by about 9 minutes. The days continue to get longer — but now by only about a minute each day. Sunrise turns around (becoming later) this week, sunset turns around (becoming earlier) in the first week of July. The two cross at the summer solstice (June 20) when we have the longest day. We’re now getting 14:56 hours:minutes of sunshine each day.
Star Gazing: The Moon was full early yesterday (Wednesday) morning, so evening star gazing will be great for the next couple weeks. Summer constellations are starting to appear; look for Scorpio — it resembles an anchor in the southeast. The Big Dipper is easily visible to the northwest with its handle pointing toward overhead. Follow the arc of the handle to Arcturus, the only bright star in that part of the sky. Mars is still visible in the evening sky, but you have to know where to look — entering the constellation Leo in the west (it’s slightly orange compared to prominent stars in the sky nearby). The easiest planet to spot is Venus —very bright in the east around 5 AM.
Forecast
Conditions should be very comfortable over the next couple weeks with only ±5° variations in temperature. Tomorrow (June 13) will be cool with a high/low range 66°/39°; the middle of next week will have ranges 77°/45°. The following week will be similar — cool on the weekend (June 21-22) and reaching the mid-70s by the middle of the following week. The forecast chance of precipitation over the next two weeks its 0% except for 3% today and 1% tomorrow. Protect against too much sun exposure with sunblock, glasses, and hats; it’s bright out there.

Avalanche Forecast
The Sierra Avalanche Center issued its final avalanche forecast on April 19. The forecast advised caution where heavy wet snow overlies weak layers, especially on steeper slopes. Check the SAC web site (https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org) for details.
Roads
I-80: The forecast is generally favorable for the next two weeks, but be alert to construction and lane closures. There are at least three possible choke points eastbound — the worst between Rainbow Road and Soda Springs. You can get onto “Old 40” at Cisco Grove and drive at a more leisurely pace along Hampshire Rocks Road and Donner Pass Road all the way to Truckee. Plan ahead by following CalTrans road reports at https://roads.dot.ca.gov.
General: Paved secondary roads around the Summit should be open with no restrictions. Off-highway vehicle routes (unpaved) will open as snow melts. Roadside snow along I-80 begins at about 5500 ft elevation.
